Aeration has been proven to be beneficial to lawns. Aerating is when small plugs are removed from compacted soil and left behind on the lawn to allow better air, water and fertilizer penetration into our dense and nutrient deficient Nevada soil. With such a high percentage of clay in our desert soil, aeration is an essential step in maintaining a thick beautiful lawn.
Dethatching is much like aeration in that it helps oxygen, water and fertilizer reach your lawn’s roots so that your grass can thrive. However, dethatching removes layers of dead grass and other plant material, known as thatch, from the base of grass plants where stems meet roots and soil. A layer of thatch usually begins to be a problem at about 1” thick and can even prevent a lawn from being mowed properly.
