Winter Preparedness

Home – Get ready for snow, ice or rain on driveways and walk-ways by having the following for the cold winter basics:

  • Snow Shovel
  • De-icing compound
  • Waterproof floor mats

Emergency Home Supplies – 
Household supplies you’ll want on hand due to power outages or other unforeseen events:

  • Flashlight and batteries
  • Battery powered radio
  • Battery powered clock
  • First-aid kit
  • Blanket and cold-weather clothing for each family member
  • Bottled Water (allow enough for 4 days)
  • Cell Phone
  • Winter Boots, Gloves and Hats
  • Manual Can Opener
  • Food that does not require heating or refrigeration (dry cereal, energy bars, stews, soups, crackers, nuts or dried fruit)
  • Pet food and additional water for household pets

Emergency On The Road Kit – 
Winter road conditions can change in an instant. Before traveling prepare a winter road kit and exam your vehicle before heading into the winter weather.

  • Check antifreeze
  • Check older batteries replace if needed
  • Keep gas tank near full to avoid freezing water in the fuel line
  • Check tires

Car winter kit – 
When traveling by car, include emergency food and clothing for each person traveling in the car. Pack supplies in an easy-to-carry emergency backpack.

  • Bag of sand, road salt or non-clumping cat litter. The bag’s extra weight means better traction, and the contents can be spread under slipping tires.
  • Ice Scraper
  • Jumper Cables
  • Small shovel
  • Tire chains
  • Flares or Reflective triangle
  • Blankets
  • Flashlight and Batteries
  • Gallon of drinking water
  • First aid kit
  • Winter boots, gloves and hat
